white lipped peccary

Tayassu peccary

Habitat: It inhabits medium and high forests but is also found in low forests and thickets. They tend to live near bodies of water and sites with a good state of conservation.

Food: they feed on fruits, leaves, roots, seeds, fungi, fish and invertebrates, although the fruits represent the highest percentage of their food.

Habits: Terrestrial animal with diurnal habits. They form groups called herds of males and females of 20 to 100 individuals. This behavior protects them from attacks by their predators. The peccary makes low-level vocalizations and clicks depending on the activity.

It is interesting that… It has a scent gland on the dorsal part of its body as a means of territorial marking and to identify the members of the group
