Swamp Crocodile
Crocodylus moreletii
Habitat: It is observed in swamps, wetlands, marshes, shallow and stagnant waters with abundant aquatic vegetation. It inhabits areas covered by tropical rain forest, dominating the mangroves.
Food: Small individuals feed on insects, snails, crustaceans, slugs and molluscs, this diet changes when the specimens mature, to be dominated by different species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
Habits: It is active at night, when it finishes hunting it spends the hours of the day basking in the sun, although it always remains alert to what is happening around it.
It is interesting that… During the nesting season the female defends her nest for around 30 m and becomes highly aggressive.
